Ten Essentials

Take the ten essentials on all outdoor outings:

  • Whistle with lanyard
  • First aid kit (including pre-cut mole skins or duct tape for blisters)
  • Compass (Silva orienteering type or equivalent)
  • Lock blade knife or pocketknife
  • Small flashlight and extra bulb and batteries
  • Waterproof matches and butane lighter
  • Fire starter or candle
  • Space blanket (Mylar type)
  • Food (nutrition bars, candy bar, trail mix, candy or MRE).
  • Roll of dental floss or other lightweight, strong cord

Basic Outdoor Gear List

Warm Weather List

  • Fanny pack with ten essentials
  • Rain gear - pants and hooded jacket
  • Boots- lace up hikers, water proof
  • Sleeping bag rated to +32 degrees F° (synthetic fill, no down)
  • Sleeping pad
  • Bowl, spoon, fork (avoid metal bowl or plate and plastic utensils)
  • Outer pullover or jacket
  • Wool blend or equivalent gloves
  • Polypropylene or wool stocking hat
  • Polypropylene, Polartec or fleece long underwear
  • One pair wool blend socks
  • Wool, polypropylene, or fleece shirt
  • Nylon or polyester pants (avoid jeans)
  • Orange cotton “T” shirt
  • Stuff/compression sack for clothing
  • School backpack or 5 gallon paint bucket (to carry gear until a backpack can be purchased)

Additional Equipment for Cold Weather

  • Extra pair wool blend socks
  • Extra Pair poly pro long underwear
  • Wool insulated pants
  • Outer coat
  • Cold weather boots
