Ten Essentials
Take the ten essentials on all outdoor outings:
- Whistle with lanyard
- First aid kit (including pre-cut mole skins or duct tape for
blisters)
- Compass (Silva orienteering type or equivalent)
- Lock blade knife or pocketknife
- Small flashlight and extra bulb and batteries
- Waterproof matches and butane lighter
- Fire starter or candle
- Space blanket (Mylar type)
- Food (nutrition bars, candy bar, trail mix, candy or MRE).
- Roll of dental floss or other lightweight, strong cord

Warm Weather List
- Fanny pack with ten essentials
- Rain gear - pants and hooded jacket
- Boots- lace up hikers, water proof
- Sleeping bag rated to +32 degrees F°
(synthetic fill, no down)
- Sleeping pad
- Bowl, spoon, fork (avoid metal bowl or plate and plastic utensils)
- Outer pullover or jacket
- Wool blend or equivalent gloves
- Polypropylene or wool stocking hat
- Polypropylene, Polartec or fleece long underwear
- One pair wool blend socks
- Wool, polypropylene, or fleece shirt
- Nylon or polyester pants (avoid jeans)
- Orange cotton “T” shirt
- Stuff/compression sack for clothing
- School backpack or 5 gallon paint bucket (to carry gear until a
backpack can be purchased)
Additional Equipment for Cold Weather
- Extra pair wool blend socks
- Extra Pair poly pro long underwear
- Wool insulated pants
- Outer coat
- Cold weather boots
